Canoeing |

|
Canoeing on the scenic Hiwassee River is an exceptional experience both for the
novice or expert. The scenery is breathtaking, the water is cold and clear, and
easy access is available in several locations.
The Hiwassee River can be broken
down in two sections above the Black Bear Cove campus; the upper section from the
power house to the old railroad trestle in Reliance Tennessee, and the section from
the old railroad trestle to Black Bear Cove.
The upper section not only has beautiful
scenery as the river winds through the gorge, but also several class I and II rapids
a re located along the way. A fun class III rapid is also located just prior to
the river access at the old railroad trestle in Reliance, TN.
The lower section
just below the old trestle river access, will take the canoeist to Black Bear Cove.
This section is swift, but with fewer rapids, and is much more relaxed; with beautiful
views of the bluffs on Star Mountain as well as Chilhowee Mountain.
Guests may also
canoe the river below Black Bear Cove with river access in many spots along the
way; the water is deeper with excellent chances to see wildlife and birds.

 |
The expert paddler will enjoy the challenges of the Ocoee River, located just a
short distance from Black Bear Cove. This river was the host for the 1996 Olympics
and sports a world class white water course. Canoeists can experience world class
rapids along with beautiful scenery.
The Ocoee Whitewater Center at the head of
the whitewater course is host to visitors of the Ocoee River and has displays of
the course, river, and surrounding area. The white water section of the River provides
excellent launching and take-out areas. |
 |
The flat water canoeist and kayaker, will enjoy the Ocoee/Parksville Lake, located
just a short distance from Black Bear Cove. |
This lake provides excellent opportunities for quite solitude with the many inlets
and coves of the lake, beautiful scenery, and excellent wildlife viewing opportunities.
Lake access is available in several locations.
If canoeing is not your activity of choice, there are many water activities to choose
from on both the Hiwassee and Ocoee River including; tubing, rafting and kayaking.
